I was the backup for three different men. My childhood best friend was still hung up on his ex, and the indie rock frontman lit a cigarette after sex and asked, "We're still friends, yeah?" Then my CEO boss coldly warned, "Do not get any ideas." As my mom kept pushing me on dates, my childhood friend pulled out his house keys: "I want to build a life with you." Yet the frontman declared, "I can't live without you."
